  1. My Mom died over a year ago, we had an ok relationship but much strain in the past, and I didn’t feel very supported or like she was that interested in me for a lot of my life. She made more of an effort in the later years, and so did I, but I suppose I always felt insecure about it. When she was in hospice and lost her ability to be present with us, I felt like she was in a dream-state of reckoning before finally slipping away.

Recently, I dreamed of my Mom being in a dim room with a bed in it– it wasn’t a room I feel I’d been in before, not like a childhood room, though that’s not unusual for dreaming. The room was cast in red, but not bright like fire but more of a painted dark red. She was younger, with long dark hair, like in my youth. She said something to me, I don’t remember what, and I answered with a tear-down, with criticism/scorn. The scenario looped around and repeated, like a video rewound and replaying a scene. Then I felt like I was torn out of there and forced back into a different realm– I didn’t feel it physically, but I heard a ripping/tearing noise, and a growling, and then a sound like a burner as I started to wake up. I was very hazy/sleepy as I woke up, but alert too and I remember getting a shiver down my back and I was laying on my side and I refused to turn around as though something was behind me, like a demon might be there, yet could not really have been as my cats were calm. My perception upon waking was that she was trapped in purgatory and suffering some sort of punishment related to me– trapped in a loop of criticism– and I was not supposed to be there and was sent out by something I didn’t see. I am not particularly religious and have never woken up to a dream like this before, though I supposed I have from time to time had some weird lucid dreams.

I’ve had some other dreams lately where she appears, and all I do is criticise her for something, get angry. They don’t usually loop around like that or scare me though. I don’t dream of demons very often or anything.

    1. Your dream about your mother, especially set in a dim room with a dark red ambiance, and the repeating scenario of criticism and scorn, seems to reflect unresolved feelings and perhaps guilt or regret about your relationship. The dark red room could symbolize deep emotional pain or passion, and her younger appearance might represent a longing for a time when things could have been different or better between you. The repeating nature of the dream suggests a cycle of unresolved emotions or conflicts that you may feel stuck in.

The sensation of being torn from the scenario with a growling sound and the subsequent fear upon waking could indicate a subconscious desire to escape these negative emotions or perhaps a fear of confronting them fully. The idea of your mother being trapped in a loop of criticism and your perception of her being in purgatory tied to your relationship might reflect your own feelings of being trapped in a cycle of guilt or unresolved grief.

Considering your mixed feelings about your relationship and the effort both of you made in her later years, it’s possible your subconscious is processing these complexities, along with the grief of her passing and the natural human tendency to wish for better resolutions.

Dreams often serve as a means for our minds to process emotions and events that we struggle with while awake. It might be helpful to explore these feelings further, possibly with a therapist or through journaling, to find a path towards healing and forgiveness, both for your mother and yourself. Remember, it’s common to have intense and confusing dreams about lost loved ones, especially as part of the grieving process, which is unique and personal to each individual.
